The Penguins took a 3-1 series lead after winning the first three games of the series. However, the Red Wings rallied back to win the next two games and force a Game 7. In Game 7, the Penguins scored two goals in the third period to come from behind and win the game 4-3.
Sidney Crosby was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the playoffs. He led the Penguins in scoring with 27 points in 24 games.
