A moderately strong 52-magnitude earthquake struck in Southern California on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at 10:33 a.m. PDT and was centered near the town of Ridgecrest, about 120 miles northeast of Los Angeles. According to the USGS, the quake was felt as far away as Las Vegas, Nevada, and Phoenix, Arizona.

A lighter 42-magnitude earthquake also struck in Southern California on Friday, according to the USGS. That quake occurred at 10:04 a.m. PDT and was centered near the town of Anza, about 80 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The quake was felt as far away as San Diego and Palm Springs.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from either earthquake. However, the quakes are a reminder of the potential for serious earthquakes in California. The state is located on the San Andreas Fault, one of the most active seismic faults in the world. In 1994, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake on the San Andreas Fault killed 63 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
